Il Fondamento werd in 1989 door hoboïst Paul Dombrecht opgericht. Paul bouwde op het fundament van een kern (nu nog steeds!) trouwe musici een gulle, transparante orkestklank uit, rondom de kleur van zijn gelauwerde barokhobo. Er volgde al snel lof: verfrissende uitvoeringen, eigen klankkleur, streven naar perfectie.
Il Fondamento wordt - naast zijn optredens in de grote muziekhuizen in België - ook geregeld uitgenodigd door gerenommeerde internationale concertpodia: Palau de la Musica Valencia, Konzerthaus Wenen, Wigmore Hall Londen, Auditorio Nacional Madrid ... Ook op belangrijke festivals in Frankrijk, Rusland (Moskou, Sint-Petersburg), Duitsland, Oostenrijk ... is het ensemble een welgekomen gast.
Il Fondamento was ook van bij de start geregeld te gast in Sint-Truiden en keert nu terug in het programma-aanbod met een Engels repertoire dat bijna een eeuw Engelse muziek omvat:
